Google wave real-time messaging

Google wave real-time messaging to blogs, mobile.... playback steps, editing with multiple participants etc.

Potentially a big Step up from Google Docs

I'll have to ask some developers to link to their API to store local XML states or something.

Long live the android :) ... which by the way I think most of us have already become with artificial materials inside us. (Got any fillings, hair dye, isn't that artificial.. )

Homeproject - we have 10 years to change the way we live

The most incredible movie about our Earth. Really fantastic !!! Duration: 1.33 hours

We are living in exceptional times. Scientists tell us that we have 10 years to change the way we live, avert the depletion of natural resources and the catastrophic evolution of the Earth's climate. The stakes are high for us and our children. Everyone should take part in the effort, and HOME has been conceived to take a message of mobilization out to every human being. For this purpose, HOME needs to be free. A patron, the PPR Group, made this possible. EuropaCorp, the distributor, also pledged not to make any profit because Home is a non-profit film. HOME has been made for you : share it! And act for the planet.

Carolyn Porco: Saturn moon Enceladus

Icy geysers hint that an ocean on Enceladus could harbor life

Below is a really excellent but older (March 2007) video talk by Carolyn Porco on TED about the Cassini voyage to Saturn, standing ovation much deserved.

I was asked to summarise where my skills are best suited

--- Typical Project Start:

Client brief and requirements gathering - I enjoy client interaction and being social; this is me on youtube

Brainstorming and ideas generation - I’ve written a book on inventions, I blog about cutting edge services and products ( I definitely have a passion for innovation. I also Project Managed an online platform that automatically creates and runs hundreds of sites with zero day-to-day management.

Delivery – Project planning and documentation skills to cover Accessibility, Agendas, Budgets, Contact reports, Design briefs, Functional Specifications, Information architecture, Issue / Risk logs, Meeting notes, Pitch Proposal writing, Project resource management, Task assignment, Task tracking, Project timelines, Search engine optimisation, Social media trends / capabilities and direction, Social networks widget gadget and defining app interaction, Testing / UAT, Web Analytics and Insight measurability evaluation, Workshops and Client meetings.

--- Typical Project End:

In that process I’m normally version controlling all files, sticking to a naming convention, making sure everything is trackable and within the scope, budget, ensuring quality, providing highlight reports to stakeholders and account teams, looking to mitigate risks, assigning ownership... updating project briefs and plans.

image matching service

Now i'm slightly annoyed... another of my ideas released live before me :(
tineye image search engine (similar solution to what i had in mind, oh well, good for them... i think it's a great idea).
Here's a concept sketch I did last year but even a few years back I had created a prototype process of matching image retrieval.. contacted potential developers, tested tons of apps.
1. Search
1.1. Image upload (file text field)
1.2. Image upload (button)
1.2.1. * Process of matching image retrieval Search results Web URLs and image thumbnails (user clicks on thumbnails or links to see where the similar image can be found)
p.s. With a little funding I could make that work still.... tineye need some competition, perhaps later in the year if I'm free.

Good Energy - 100% Renewable Energy

I've switched to 100% pure renewable electricity!
  • Yes it costs more
  • Yes I'm broke
  • Yes I feel better
  • Yes I want to use electricity when I want
  • Yes I think many of the ...'get this cause you'll be saving the planet'... marketing campaigns are a load of bull

Good Energy’s commitment to its ethical values as well as to promoting and developing renewable energy in the UK has been independently accredited by the Ethical Company Organisation over the past three years. We have once again been awarded Ethical Company Status for 2009, scoring the maximum 100 points.

I know I blowing my own trumpet a little but it'd be good if more people switched. I remember meeting the Chairman of a big Energy company last year who astounded me by trying to convice me that it was impossible to get energy from waves! I mean, it's not like I'm some hippee eco warrior or something but that chap was really a little arroagant and stupid. (FYI: I'm working on a new wave power patent... anyone care to invest :)

Scam letter from Community Trade Mark Filing Service

Scam letter from Community Trade Mark Filing Service, 17 - 19 Fenwick Street, Liverpool, L2 7LS If you've also got a letter from Community Trade Mark Filing Service then ignore it or report it. It's not from the Patent Office and you don't need to pay them. (I did call the Patent Office and they have hundreds of complaints already but are not yet taking any action.)
They basically get all the Patent Office customer details and send letters to them trying to make it look like you need to pay them. If like me you want to move things on, you can report them to trading standards.

Wolfram - Alpha Is Coming!

What google doesn't want you to know.
There's a new type of knowledge based search engine.
Alpha is Due to be released sometime in May '09. (Not live yet)

Other super geek research I was looking at: (Evolutionary Neurocontrol, Genetic algorithm, How the Genetic Algorithm Works). My aim in this space is to try to create some software that can understand meaning in Language (I need lots of dev help). There are other areas which I think if combined would produce advanced results like metamorphic code ... is code that can reprogram itself (certainly gets the imagination going).
Why is GA of interest, well, for example, a genetic algorithm developed jointly by engineers from General Electric and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute produced a high-performance jet engine turbine design that was three times better than a human-designed configuration and 50% better than a configuration designed by an expert system by successfully navigating a solution space containing more than 10387 possibilities. Conventional methods for designing such turbines are a central part of engineering projects that can take up to five years and cost over $2 billion; the genetic algorithm discovered this solution after two days on a typical engineering desktop workstation (Holland 1992, p.72). HTC Magic, vodafone, contacts

If you're an early bird and managed to get an HTC Magic from vodafone when they got released this week in the UK, you might be wondering how to import your contacts from your old phone.

Well if you don't already have all your contacts on google , that's what you need to do and here are some links to help you do that.

Why post this, well:
HTC don't have sync details on their site
Google don't have a mac to google contacts sync
Vodafone don't generally have any tech details so why ask

1: Get a sync app, i suggest spanning sync, another is fruux (come google VCs just make an offer and bye them).
2: Read the google blog and note Google Sync Beta for iPhone but not yet for the Magic
3: check out the HTC site is you like
4: note that not all androids are yet covered by google mobile

5: (optional) download tons of crazy apps like the metal detector and talking clock and let me know when there's a good speech to text app

Brandstation User Activity Insight with Polestar

Brandstation site owners now have access to powerful User Activity Reports which are integrated with SAP BusinessObjects Polestar!

As a site owner you in the Admin > Activity Report page, there are two new links.
“Export User Activity Report” allows the latest social network activity to be saved as an excel file.

“View User Activity in Polestar” adds a powerful visualisation to network activity.

image: most active participation around a tagged topic

As the brandstation team have created enterprise social network applications we understand that typically the larger the organisation the more perspective is needed to visualise usage and behavior statistics to highlight the big picture and drive business value.

image: relationship between members around activities

By integrating the brandstation User Activity data with Polestar ondemand, you can now get an in-depth understanding of the behavior and participation on your social network. For example you might want to highlight where focused conversations are happening, who is having those conversations, which users have the strongest relationships or predict what activities will be the most popular amongst different users.

image: event search with member trends

Integrating brandstation with SAP BusinessObjects Polestar means you now have simple, rapid analytical power to provide immediate answers to business questions. You can use keyword searches to explore information in business intelligence, problem solving and communications.

The real time nature of social networking presents a problem in understanding how business processes are solved. So far this has remained untouched by social network applications. With Polestar we’re now able to mashup data from disparate data tables of social network user behavior into a new fluid and rich interface, representing member engagement activity and conversation participation. Further, we’re able to drill into specific topics and with date/time stamping to find emerging trends.

image: visualise contribution of tagged content and user activity

Possible usage scenarios:
Wanting to know which people are likely to be the most active contributors around a specific topic and to engage and participate in conversation.

image: which are the most active members

The brandstation social network platform also allows you to select specific activities and topic areas to further focus on active members in those areas.

Quick thanks to infolinks

We joined infolinks back in October 2008.
We found out about Infolinks by actively looking for advertising partners.
It was very easy to add infolinks to our initial site, only a few lines of code.
No changes were needed on our site to use infolinks, just simply adding the infolinks code.
The infolinks earnings have been to our expectations and we are rolling out the ad format to other new sites. When we started using infolinks we had tried other ad networks and formats before but this was pretty much the easiest one to implement and again the easiest way to make money. Payment terms are as expected and fair.
Is the Infolinks support responsive?
I’m the CTO of a company looking after 150+ sites, some we create for clients and some we run ourselves, can you imagine how many emails / developments / issues I have to deal with everyday! Well I remember our Account Manager and Support at Infolinks, she’s called Sarah. I remember this not because we’ve had to be in contact much but because she has been so super quick and helpful. We now have bigger plans and Infolinks we have a place with us as we go forward. develops cutting edge social media technology to create communication and collaboration tools that are easy to access, use, manage and moderate with user-friendly interfaces. Brandstation is the outstanding product of Ltd, a London based social media company focusing on innovative social network technology. Why do avast not allow iframes

Why do avast not allow iframes in sites with content from another domain?

They cause virus alerts but 99% of the time iframes of course are used to bring information in from other sites! I've contacted avast to see when this, verging on annoying position is being taken... customers were reporting virus alerts on some site and I've just had to remove innocent iframe code!

Either avast change or i suggest to edit preferences / get another AV solution.

Politics in the Workplace

Every so often a decision needs to be made relating to political situations.
Personally I'm not a fan of any visas or borders.

This week a new TV channel was added for Tibet and we wanted to know if there should be a country for Tibet.

Tibet is currently under the administration of the People's Republic of China, a situation that the Central Tibetan Administration considers an illegitimate military occupation. The position of the CTA is that Tibet is a distinct nation with a long history of independence. The current policy of the Dalai Lama, however, is that he does not seek full independence for Tibet, but would accept Tibet as a genuine autonomous region within the People's Republic of China.

Decision: Sorry, no new country on for Tibet unless the Dalai Lama returns to rule.

The Prodigy - Omen

Why do these guys always get number 1 hits? You don't need to understand their music you just need to get the vibe. The Prodigy have gone straight to the top of the album chart with new album Invaders Must Die. Their fifth UK number 1 album / one of the fastest selling albums of the year with 100,000 copies sold. (marketing, timing, sound or all 3)

Excellent artfair to see - What is art? Well I'm not going to take on that discussion now but if you prefer art to be interactive like me then you must go see this exhibition in London today or tomorrow!

Google Latitude vs IMLocate

Google Latitude is launched 5 years after I created IMLocate

In 2004 I coordinated a small team of developers who made a mobile application for users to find friends. Our Java application was called IMLocate and worked by cell triangulation and returns the results as txt, including postcode. The other mobile application that we created was called IMChat a simple instant messenger application and we had over 4000 downloads. (I ran out of my own funding so we never really launched IMLocate :(

When will North Korea join the World?

UPDATE: 19th March '09... Google blocked the google map i had previously of the reported Launching Ground in Hwadae County, North Hamgyong Province ? ! So I've removed the map and took a screen shot of what showed.

Radio and TV sets in North Korea are pre-tuned to government stations that pump out a steady stream of propaganda. The state has been dubbed the world's worst violator of press freedom by the media rights body Reporters Without Frontiers.

North Korea has a minimal presence on the internet. The web pages of North Korea's official news agency, KCNA ( ), are hosted by the agency's bureau in Japan.

North Korea is now in preparation for launching 'an experimental communications satellite' Kwangmyongsong-2 at Tonghae Satellite Launching Ground in Hwadae County, North Hamgyong Province.

Note: First North Korean nuclear test on 30 October 2006
Human rights organisations estimate at least 200,000 people are held in North Korea’s concentration camps. Other reference:

I wish North Korean would join the World but beware, NK has zero press freedom and the 50 million living there no nothing of the World other that what they are told from their national news agency.

Hotel sanctuary for bird watchers

Hotel sanctuary for bird watchers - Full article on the BBC !!

A hotel specifically catering for bird watchers is to be built in Cornwall.

Work on the £2m, 30-bedroom eco-lodge on the outskirts of Hayle is due to start within weeks after plans were approved by Penwith District Council.

The site, currently occupied by a garage and furniture shop, overlooks the estuary at Hayle which is home to 20,000 waders and seabirds.

Each bedroom will be equipped with its own telescope and binoculars as well as bird identification charts.

Landowner Mike Bows, who already runs two hotels in Cornwall, said he gave the architects a free hand in the design.

The hotel will boast wooden cladding and a gently sloping turf roof to blend in with the landscape.

Each bedroom will have balconies looking out over the estuary which will act as bird hides.

Economic boost

In a bid to help the environment, the hotel will be built using green initiatives, including low-energy climate control and lighting.

The recycling of grey water and the use of sustainable drainage systems will also reduce the lodge's environmental impact on its surroundings.

Hotel site - current site
It is hoped the hotel will boost the region's economy all year round

"Hayle needs a boost at the moment and this will bring jobs and tourism to the area," said Mr Bows.

As much of the south-west of England's tourism is linked with the summer months, it it hoped that the new hotel will go some way into helping the region's economy in the quieter winter months too.

Wildlife in the estuary is especially rich during the colder seasons so the hotel will remain open throughout the year.

Gavin Woodford, from GHK architects who designed the lodge, said: "This development will deliver a landmark building which will greatly add to the tourism marketing potential for the whole region.

"A priority for the Penwith local economy is to enhance the value of the tourism industry through carefully considered development that is sympathetic to the area's outstanding natural environment."
